TWO IRON AGE HILL FORTS ON DORSET’S HIGHEST PEAKS OFFERING FANTASTIC VIEWS OF THE MARSHWOOD VALE, ALL THE WAY TO THE SEA.
At 277 meters (909 feet), Pilsdon is Dorset’s second highest hill. A Drurotrigian hill fort (once populated with 14 roundhouses) sits on the top of the hill offering long reaching views of the Marshwood Vale and down to the coast.
Just two meters higher (279m, 915ft), Lewesdon pips its neighbour, Pilsdon Pen to the title of highest point in Dorset. The Iron Age ditches still remain although a little disturbed by quarrying and tree felling. In more recent times Lewesdon Hill was the site for one of the Armada Beacons in 1588 and was used to warn of an impending attack by Spain
